G&L tech resources: Bridges

With Kahler, Floyd Rose has been at the forefront of vibrato innovation in terms of tuning stability and range. His bridge is covered by US Pat. 4,171,661, filed January 3, 1977, with further fine-tuning improvements in US Pat. 4,497,236, filed March 15, 1982. With its novel design, still available as the Original Limited 1984 Tremolo System reissue, it enabled a whole new kind of music with dive bombing and other fingerboard pyrotechnics. This double-locking system, where the strings are cla,ped at the both the bridge and nut ends, also includes the Floyd Rose locking nut discussed separately. A Floyd Rose unit appeared for the first time on G&L guitars in 1992 when an Original Tremolo Series, as licensed to Gotoh Japan, was featured on different Climax models: e.g. the Climax “XL” and Climax “plus” shown below. The Floyd Rose Tremolo System also appeared on the BBE-era Invader series, which post-1996 became the successor to the Climax, including the Invader Plus, although they predominantly have chrome finished units. However, no ASAT has ever been produced with such a unit.
