Most of the model designations used by Collings are based on well-known and popular models by Martin, e.g. 0-, 00-, 000-, OM-, D-, and DS-models, or Gibson, e.g. L-00 (C10), CJ-, and SJ-models. And most of these models, read dimensions here, have been around for many decades if not a century already. Beyond the truly boutique builders, where customers can order about anything they want, it is very rare an established manufacturer introduces an instrument with hereto unused dimensions. Bob Taylor coming up with his Grand Auditorium in 1994 is the most famous example. And Bill Collings also has its unique and proprietary model: the C100 (2025 snapshot), which had a limited initial run in the early-‘90s. It was originally designed as a slightly smaller version of the SJ. But due to that similarity, the model was discontinued shortly after its introduction. Two decades later, this version of the model was reintroduced at the 2019 Winter NAMM as a “bigger, bolder cousin” of the C10 before being discontinued again in September 2025. With a 19¾” body length, body width of 15⅞”, 4¾” body depth, 25½” scale length, 14 frets to the body, and total length of 41¼”, it is indeed an oversized C10, represented in this collection by the Cowboy. It is unknown to me to what extend these dimensions agree with the ‘90s version of the C100. But most of the current ones are similar to those for large body guitars like a dreadnought but with the much smaller waist of a parlor guitar. The default C100 has a Sitka spruce top combined with Honduran mahogany back and sides. This C100 Deluxe (2025 snapshot) has an upgraded German spruce top and, as is standard for the Deluxe, East Indian rosewood back and sides. The body has ivoroid binding with B/W purfling, an ivoroid rosette with B/W/B purfling, tortoise pickguard, belly style ebony bridge with bone saddle, Deluxe style maple/rosewood backstrip, and is finished in high-gloss nitrocellulose lacquer. The high-gloss polyester resin finished Honduran mahogany neck has a C-shape profile, akin to an electric guitar and hence feeling familiar to players of those instruments. It further has an ivoroid bound, 14”-26” compound radius ebony fingerboard with Mother-of-Pearl (MOP) dot position markers, a 111⁄16” bone nut, ivoroid bound “Haircut” headstock with ebony veneer, MOP logo, and 16:1 gear ratio Waverly nickel-plated tuning machines.
