Alright, alright already! Here a 17” scale Collings tenor ukulele with rare ‘3’ appointments specially built for the 2014 NAMM show. A solid Sitka spruce top in Tangerine burst is combined with quilted maple back and sides. This body with the usual dimensions of 8⅝” width, 11” length, and 2⅞” depth, is double bound (ivoroid with B/W/B/W/B top purfling), has a high-gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish, and an abalone rosette. The East Indian rosewood bridge has a bone saddle with 111⁄16” string spacing. The neck is different in that flamed maple is used instead of the usual Honduran mahogany. It still has a C-shaped profile, ivoroid heel cap, ivoroid bound 12” radius East Indian rosewood fingerboard with ivoroid dot position markers, and 1⅜” wide bone nut. The ivoroid bound “Haircut” headstock has an East Indian rosewood veneer with ivoroid Collings logo and 4:1 gear ratio Pegheds planetary gear tuning machines. This gorgeous instrument comes in the original Ameritage case. This UT3 version does not have a separate page on the old Collings website. Instead, a 2014 snapshot for the UT3K is provided. When checking out the Options panel on that page, one can find the tonewoods and burst finish used on this instrument.

Again something different! My 6th ukulele, bought shortly after the 5th and as part of a package deal with the 7th. It needed a fast decision because Sylvan Music in Santa Cruz, CA, had this ukulele listed both on Reverb as well as their website but with a rather large price difference. Yes, the higher price, plus added taxes, fees, and S/H, would have resulted in paying almost 50% more on the former marketplace. The good folks at Sylvan Music admitted their intend was to price it the same on their website as on Reverb but I was too fast for them to correct their oversight in time. My gain! But also kudos to Sylvan Music for sticking to the original deal. I hope I made it up by buying that UC2 (spalted pecan) from them too. These ‘3’ appointed Collings ukuleles are extremely rare and I am fortunate to have one. In person, the ukulele looks great. The Tangerine burst of the top complements the yellowish hue of the maple perfectly. And I love the water surface like look of the quilt. Maple has a rather flat frequency response curve causing it to complement all the other wood combinations in this collection. Beyond that, the ukulele has a nice attack, punch, and clarity which makes it come through the mix beautifully. A great addition indeed.
