G&L tech resources: Nuts & string retainers

Micarta, or “High tech” plastic, was the material for the default nut used on all G&L instruments from the inception of the company. The oldest guitar in this collection with such a nut is an F-100 Series II w/DFV from 1980. The oldest bass is this 1981 L-2000E, even though the L-1000 is older. However, it is know that instrument has Graph-Tech TUSQ replacement nut. It remained the default certainly up to 2000, when it is explicitly called out as the material used for nuts on its (archived) Options page, and likely up to 2009 when replaced by a bone nut. Hence, this 2008 ASAT Classic w/spalted maple top is likely the youngest instrument still with a Micarta nut.
